Tomado del prefacio: "This volume presents for the first time to the general public many fine and unusual examples of the pre-Columbian art of the Maya Indians of Central America. The collection upon which it is largely based represents the best of the holdings of the National Museum of Archaeology of the Republic of Guatemala, brought to the United States to form the nucleus of a special exhibition held at the University Museum, Philadelphia; The Detroit Institute of Arts; the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, Kansas City; the de young memorial Museum, San Francisco; and the Los Angeles Country Museum. In addition to sculpture and ceramics from Guatemala, the cooperating museums have borrowed form a number of institutions and individual the best examples of maya art that could be obtained."
