Resumen:
Tomado de la solapa: "Academical dress arose by a process of evolution and modification of ordinary everyday wear. The gown of robe was the topcoat or cloak of the medieval scholar, and the hood was the head-cover. Academical dress has been worn by graduates and students for hundreds of years and even in this modern world there is no obvious sign of such garments becoming obsolete. Each new university on receiving its charter, adopts its own robes which are distinctive and peculiar to that institution. This book has been designed to indicate the range of gowns, hoods, robes and caps worn by graduates and undergraduates of British universities. A specification including British Colour Council references, is given for the system of academical dress at each university, and a section of line drawings of gowns, hoods and caps includes diagrams explaining their component parts. There is a key to help the reader to identify hoods, with their many variations of colour and style. The range of degrees granted by each university is shown in the index, and a list of abbreviations of degrees awarded by British universities is followed by the full titles of the degrees and the names of the universities granting them. Dr Shaw has made a detailed study of the subject over many years, and has been commissioned by a number of new universities to design their academical dress. Much of the information in this book is not easily available elsewhere, and no attempt has previously been made to bring it together in one volume." --
