Tomado del Contenido: Among the numerous remains of Maya cities, few are more interesting, though several are more extensive, than those of Quiriguá. Here are to be found some of the finest known examples of Maya sculptural art which have been brought to light. Quiriguá flourished during what is known as the "Old Empire", the classic period of the Maya. At this same time barbarian invasions were bringing about the fall of Rome and Europe was passing into the Dark Ages.
