That among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They called this a self evident truth. 87 years later, Abraham Lincoln reaffirmed this idea on the Civil War battlefield of Gettysburg. And in 1963 these same words echoed from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial as Martin Luther King, Jr. urged America to fulfill the promise of its founding. But humans are separated by enormous differences in talent and circumstance. Why would anyone believe that all men are created equal? That all should be free? That all deserve a voice in choosing their leaders? Why would any nation consider this a self-evident truth? For the millions around the world who have never tasted liberty, the question cries for an answer.
Tomado de la página del Acton Institute: We produced “The Birth of Freedom” to keep alive the knowledge of the role religion has played historically in the “birth,” growth and securing of freedom. While this historic reality would have been at one time a commonly held understanding, today it is not. We want to suggest something else through this film, namely that freedom cannot long prosper outside of morality—that not only did the Judeo-Christian tradition bring liberty to fruition, it must remain vibrant to sustain it. “The Birth of Freedom” is one more tool the Acton Institute has developed to better equip thoughtful people to understand and appreciate the moral basis of liberty, and the positive obligation to right action in the use of our individual freedom. It is only through this understanding throughout the world, we can build up societies that are prosperous, free, and virtuous.
